FC Juárez’s Diego “El Puma” Chávez died at the age of 28 in a car crash in Ciudad Juárez on Wednesday morning. The club confirmed Chávez’s death in an official statement released later in the day.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the entire FC Juárez community that our player, Diego “El Puma” Chávez, passed away early this morning, February 14, in a car accident,” the club said in its official statement on Wednesday.
“Our players, staff, technical staff, directors and all of us who make up this institution, are heartbroken by this unfortunate news, because more than just a player, today we have to say goodbye to a member of our large family.” said the club.
Chávez made 19 appearances for FC Juárez across the 2023 Liga MX Apertura tournament, and the 2024 Liga MX Clausura tournament, which started last month, and the club is six matches into.
As of Wednesday night, there is no official word from FC Juárez or Liga MX on the status of FC Juárez’s scheduled match for Saturday against Puebla at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez.
