EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A wildfire is burning on Pina Peak in the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument outside of Hatch in Doña Ana County, a Bureau of Land Management spokesman said.
The fire on Pina Peak started Saturday, May 17 and is believed to be caused by lightning, said William Wight, spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management’s Las Cruces District.
The fire is estimated to be at about 200 acres as of Monday morning with 0 percent containment, Wight said. The fire is at the top of the slope on Pina Peak, he added.
The fire is about 8 miles south of Hatch and about 30 miles northeast of Las Cruces.
Wind is the biggest issue right now and once the forecasted wind subsides, they should be better able to get a handle on the fire, he said.
At present, there is no risk to life or property and crews are working on containment, Wight said.
The BLM has three fire engines and two utility truck crews responding to the fire.
