EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — It’s less than a day before 4th of July, and for many that means family gatherings, barbecue, and of course fireworks. However, fire officials urge people to keep safety top of mind.
“If you’re thinking about Independence [Day], know that you want to celebrate in a safe, independent manner,” said El Paso Fire Department Battalion Chief Taron Peebles.
“Don’t let the hospitals be the reason why you’re safe, don’t let the fire department be the reason why you’re safe, make yourself safe. And again let 911 and the hospitals do our job. But independence starts with you,” he said.
The use of fireworks within the city limits of El Paso are prohibited, while the county just banned the use of some aerial fireworks, specifically those classified as “skyrockets with sticks” and “missiles with fins” in the unincorporated parts of the county.
Both the city and county of El Paso say any use of fireworks that violates their ordinances will result in Class C misdemeanor with fines of up to $500.
However, a local operator of a Mr. W Fireworks shop said they have been busy, and expect sales to be up as the 4th of July lands on a Thursday and makes for a longer weekend.
He encourages people to enjoy Independence Day and have fun, but to prioritize safety.
“People get the adrenaline rush and it’s awesome, it’s amazing, but make sure that you guys always, always practice safety first. We always say ‘make sure that it’s on a level ground, make sure that there’s nothing that is flammable around, but most importantly, have some water, some dirt, and just make sure you don’t go into really, really dry areas,” said Richard Garcia, operator of Mr. W Fireworks.
Peebles offered tips on how to stay safe during this 4th of July:
Beware of your surroundings, keeping children and pets away from hazardous zones (at least 3 feet away).
Keep grilling or any firework activity at least 7 ft away from a structure.
Have fire extinguishers, a water hose, or water buckets prepared when using fireworks.
Do not pick up fireworks that you may think may still be burning.
Be conscious of protecting your eyes when using fireworks.
Dial 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency.
