EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Deb Haaland, former U.S. Interior secretary in the Biden Administration and newly announced Democratic candidate for New Mexico governor, will be in Southern New Mexico this weekend.
Haaland will hold a rally at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 in Las Cruces at the Alameda House, 526 S. Alameda Blvd.
This is part of a 19-stop statewide campaign launch tour.
She will also have a meet-and-greet Sunday in Deming. Her campaign provided no details on that event and said it was closed to media.
She will also have a meet-and-greet at 2 p.m. Sunday in Silver City at the Grant County Democratic Party headquarters, 3060 U.S. Highway 180.
Haaland is the first major candidate to announce her bid for New Mexico governor in 2026.
Current Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is term-limited and cannot run again.
Before becoming the first Native American Cabinet secretary while serving under Biden, Haaland served in the U.S. House from 2019 to 2021, and before that she chaired New Mexico’s Democratic Party.
Haaland is a Laguna Pueblo member. She is the second highest person of Native American ancestry to serve in the U.S. government.
Charles Curtis, who was Herbert Hoover’s vice president, was a member of the Kaw tribe.
Media reports say Haaland would be the first Native American woman to ever serve as a governor of a state.
