EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Former Las Cruces High School standout basketball player Isaiah Carr has a new college home.
Carr, a 7-footer, announced that he was transferring to Drake University on his X social media account.
Carr, who will be a senior, has spent the past two seasons with the University of Denver and before that he was at Grand Canyon University.
Carr was part of a stellar era of Bulldawg basketball when he played at Las Cruces High. Carr teamed up with classmates William “Deuce” Benjamin and Kaden Self to go to three straight New Mexico 5A basketball championship games.
They won the state title in 2020 and lost in the title game in 2021 and 2022. In both of those seasons, their only loss came in the state final.
In 2022, they faced off with Volcano Vista, which was also undefeated heading into the state title game. The game went into overtime before the Bulldawgs lost 66-55 in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate.
This past season at Denver, Carr, a junior, played in just 12 games. He missed 20 games with an “upper body injury,” according to the men’s basketball page for Denver.
Carr averaged 17.4 minutes per game in the games he did play in and averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
The year before, Carr played in all 34 games and started 10 for Denver. He averaged 5.2 points and 4.4 rebounds in 16.8 minutes of action, according to the Denver basketball website.
Carr joins a Drake team that was regular season and tournament champions in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. The Bulldogs beat Missouri in the opening round of the NCAA tournament and then lost to Texas Tech in the second round.
