Posted on July 16, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Fort Bliss soldier recently traveled to her hometown in Kerrville, Texas, to help with flood search and rescue efforts and was able to provide closure to five families, according to a press release from Fort Bliss.

Fort Bliss says 1st. Lt. Emily Ake, public affairs officer for the 5th Armored Brigade at Fort Bliss, traveled to Kerrville last week to help with the flood disaster.

“Kerrville shaped who I am,” Ake said. “There was never a question about going back to help—these are my people, and I’ll do whatever it takes to support them. The devastating floods brought unimaginable challenges, but they also revealed the incredible strength and resilience of the Kerrville community.”

Ake also serves as a police officer with the Kerrville Police Department when not mobilized and is a U.S. Army Reservist currently mobilized as an observer and controller/trainer.

Ake partnered with volunteers and residents in Kerrville, who were able to provide closure to five families and assisted in searching for those buried under debris, according to Fort Bliss.

Fort Bliss says Ake’s local church, Harvest Christian Center of El Paso, also donated to recovery efforts in regards to the deadly flood.

“1st Lt. Ake’s selfless return to her hometown in its hour of need is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that define both her character and the community she serves. In uniform and out, she embodies the Army Values and leads with compassion, courage, and commitment. We are proud to serve alongside her.”

Col. Douglas F. Serie, 5 AR BDE commander.
