EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Fran and I worked together at KVIA for 27 years, and his thoughtful words inspired my goodbye speech there in 2020.
I remember like it was yesterday when I told him in the hallway that I was retiring. He smiled at me and said, “I will miss you, but you made my life better.” Whoa! This honest, simple, yet profound phrase touched me deeply. I teared up, gave him a hug, and said thank you.
As I walked back to my office, those words made me reflect on all the people I had met over the years as a broadcast journalist who had made my life better.
Every interview was a learning opportunity, a chance to grow emotionally and spiritually. These interactions, like the one with Fran, enriched my life and made me a better person.
Fran would always text me during the holidays with a Merry Christmas or Happy Labor Day. The last one I received was this previous Easter. He mentioned he and his wife Patty were struggling with the side effects of radiation and chemo but hoped they would pass soon. He ended with, “Stay well, and God bless!”
To Patty: My condolences and healing prayers.
To Fran: You made my life better.
