EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Gadsden Independent School District is considering “consolidating” Berino Elementary School and combining it with other nearby schools, the district said in a news release sent out on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
This is one recommendation included in Superintendent Travis Dempsey’s “Right-Sizing Plan” that is currently under consideration by the GISD Board.
The Gadsden ISD board has held discussions in open session during regularly scheduled board meetings as well as four separate community meetings to inform and engage the public about this plan, the district said.
The district said it will have one more community meeting before the GISD Board considers the recommendation at its Oct. 30 meeting.
The district said that they are considering consolidating Berino Elementary because it has the lowest enrollment in the Gadsden High feeder pattern, with 306 students.
“Consolidating into nearby schools would ensure full staffing, preserve programs and prevent disruption,” the district said.
By consolidating Berino Elementary, the district would also “avoid the risk” of layoffs, the district said.
If approved, attendance zones will be redrawn so Berino students can attend Vado, North Valley, or Gadsden elementary schools. Families will know before the next school year begins where their students will go, the district said.
The district is also considering relocating Alta Vista Early College High School to the current site of Berino Elementary, if this proposal is approved.
