KTSM News – Gadsden ISD hit by ransomware attack

Posted on August 13, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Gadsden Independent School District was hit by a ransomware attack on its network on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 13, but student and employee data were not impacted, according to the district.

The attack happened at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, and immediate steps were taken to secure all systems and mitigate the impact of the attack, the district said in a news release.

Here are some key points, according to the district.

Student and employee data was not compromised during the incident. The district also says that “protecting our students’ information remains our top priority.”

Text messaging was used to inform all teachers and staff to power down their computers and disconnect from the network until further notice. “This precautionary measure is critical to ensuring the safety and integrity of our network,” the district said.

Student Chrombooks were not affected by the attack. The district said it is “confident” that students will be able to regain access to the network “very soon,” possibly by Wednesday, Aug. 14.

“Our team is working diligently to resolve this issue and restore normal operations as quickly as possible. We will continue to keep our community informed as we progress,” the district said in a news release.
