EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Texas state Rep. Mary E. Gonzalez., D-San Elizario, has been one of the driving forces behind a cancer center that will be built as a collaborative effort between University Medical Center and Texas Tech in El Paso.
Gonzalez will be the special guest with anchor Andy Morgan during the 6:30 p.m. newscast Monday, Sept. 15 on KTSM 9.
The center is scheduled to break ground on Wednesday.
For years, cancer patients in El Paso have had to travel out of town to places like Houston or Phoenix for specialized cancer treatment.
Back in 2023, the state Legislature set aside $65 million for the project.
As part of the Appropriations Committee, Gonzalez was instrumental in bringing UMC and Texas Tech together on the project.
She is also expected to talk about changes in standarized testing for students in Texas and other developments in Austin.
