EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The opening of a student-operated Goodwill Store will allow special-education students at Canutillo High School to develop real-world experiences and more.
The grand opening of the Employee Development Service (EDS) Goodwill Store will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 at Canutillo High School, located at 6675 S. Desert Blvd.
The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to noon, according to the news release by Canutillo Independent School District (CISD).
The partnership with Goodwill Industries of El Paso is aiming to provide special-education students with job skills and real-world experiences, according to CISD.
“We are incredibly proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative,” said Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “The Employee Development Service Goodwill store will not only empower our special-education students by providing them with essential life and job skills but will also foster a sense of independence and confidence as they prepare for their future careers.”
Students will be working in the store to gain hands-on training in retail operations, customer service and inventory management, according to CISD.
“This partnership with Canutillo ISD represents the core of what Goodwill stands for; transforming lives through the power of work,” said Melinda Jordan, CEO of Goodwill Industries of El Paso. “We are honored to support these students as they embark on their journey toward personal and professional growth.”
The store will have a variety of goods, including gently used clothing, accessories and household items.
All proceeds from the sales will be reinvested to continue enhancing student’s learning experiences and provide additional resources, according to CISD.
A Goodwill donation box will be placed on Cauntillo High School’s campus that will support the program and the public is encouraged to use and donate their goods.
