EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — More than three weeks into the federal government shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could be the next major program to run out of funding. If the shutdown extends past Oct. 27, over 40 million Americans could lose access to food assistance.
In Texas alone, the potential cutoff could impact over 3 million residents, more than 150,000 of those people in El Paso.
Kris Yagel, interim CEO of El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, said the organization is bracing for a surge in need if SNAP funding is suspended.
“We are anticipating that, if this continues past the Oct. 27 date, we could have a surge in people needing assistance,” said Yagel. “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst has kind of been our motto.”
At the Kelly Center for Hunger Relief, staff are already seeing rising demand.
“Our numbers were 1,022 through our lines,” said Brenda Estrada, the Center’s community engagement director.
“We’re open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 to noon. Normally, we get 700 to 800, and suddenly, it’s just spiking up,” she said.
Both Yagel and Estrada said the uncertainty around SNAP funding has added stress for families already struggling to afford groceries. Local food banks are increasing outreach efforts to inform recipients about the potential halt and ensure they know where to turn for help.
“People need food to be okay. Mentally, physically, in every possible way,” said Estrada.
As hunger relief organizations brace for higher demand, they are urging community members to step up by donating or volunteering.
“It’s called El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, not the El Paso Food Bank Fighting Hunger. We’re all El Pasoans. We have a part of our population that needs us. And I believe that leaders show up, and it’s time for you to show up and join us,” Yagel said.
“For every dollar you give, we can get seven meals to the people who need it. If you bring $10, it’s 70 meals. If you’re a first-time donor, we have a match going on right now, and what that is, it’s 100% match. So, your $10, if you’re a first-time donor, now becomes $20,” said Yagel.
