KTSM News – Halloween safety tips for pets this spooky season

Posted on October 20, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – As Halloween approaches, pet owners are gearing up for the spooky season, but with all the excitement, it’s important to ensure that your pets stay safe and comfortable amid the festivities. Between costumes, trick-or-treaters, and all the noise, Halloween can be a stressful time for pets. To help you navigate the season, here are some essential tips From El Paso Animal Services for keeping your furry friends happy and safe:

  1. Tire Them Out Early

Start the day with a good workout for your pet. Whether it’s a long walk, a game of fetch, or some active playtime, tiring them out before the evening commotion can help reduce stress and anxiety. A tired pet is less likely to become agitated by the sights and sounds of Halloween night.

  1. Consider Their Social Comfort

While some pets may enjoy the hustle and bustle of Halloween, others can find the chaos overwhelming. If your pet isn’t accustomed to large groups of people or loud noises, it’s best to keep them in a quiet, safe space away from the action. Play calming music and provide their favorite toys to keep them relaxed.

  1. Costume Comfort Is Key

Dressing up your pet can be a fun way to join in on the festivities, but make sure that your pet is comfortable in whatever they wear. Not all pets enjoy wearing costumes, and some may find them restrictive or irritating. If your pet isn’t a fan, a festive bandana or collar can be a great alternative to keep them involved without the discomfort of a full costume.

  1. Check for Safety Hazards

If you do decide to dress up your pet, ensure that the costume doesn’t have any loose or dangling parts that could become a choking hazard. Avoid costumes with small pieces that your pet could chew off and accidentally swallow.

  1. Keep Candy and Decorations Out of Reach

Halloween means an abundance of candy, but remember that chocolate and certain sweets are toxic to pets. Always store candy in secure locations, and talk to your children about how dangerous it can be for pets to ingest these treats. Additionally, any decorations, such as candles or fake spiders, should be kept out of reach to avoid any risk of ingestion or burns. Opt for flameless LED candles for a pet-friendly alternative to traditional jack-o-lanterns.

  1. Microchip Your Pet

With the door opening and closing for trick-or-treaters, it’s easy for pets to slip outside unnoticed. Ensure your pet is microchipped and wearing an ID tag with up-to-date information. Having a microchip is a reliable way to track your pet in case they get lost during the festivities.

Destiny Valdez the Social Media Specialist for El Paso Animal Services said these simple can ensure your pets stay safe, comfortable, and included in the Halloween fun, without the stress and anxiety that can sometimes accompany the holiday.
