EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – As the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are just around the corner, Horizon City announced its Police Department will conduct a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Operation from March 14-17 to “ensure that everyone has a fun, memorable, and most importantly, safe weekend.”
The operation came about because Horizon City has seen a troubling rise in alcohol-related motor-vehicle accidents, some of which ended in serious injuries or death, they said.
“The Horizon City Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone in our community,” Horizon Police Chief Marco Vargas said. “While we want everyone to have a great time celebrating, we urge you to plan ahead for a safe ride home if you are drinking. Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but also illegal, and it will not be tolerated.”
Here’s what to expect during the operation, according to Horizon City PD:
- Impaired driving enforcement: Officers will be actively searching for impaired drivers, working to keep streets safe and holding offenders accountable for dangerous behavior.
- DWI arrests: Anyone found driving while intoxicated will be arrested and processed at the El Paso County Jail.
- Intoxilyzer and blood samples: Drivers who refuse to submit to breathalyzer testing will be required to provide a blood sample under legal procedures.
- Vehicle impoundment: Vehicles of those arrested for DWI will be impounded at the scene.
“As always, the HCPD encourages all residents to make safe choices: designate a sober driver, use a taxi, or take advantage of rideshare services if you plan to consume alcohol. By making responsible decisions, we can ensure that Horizon City remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone,” Horizon City PD said.
