EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Flu season generally begins in October, but health officials in the El Paso region are starting to see a few reported cases right now.
“Unfortunately, we have heard, here in El Paso that we’ve already had first cases reported. and so, we want to make sure that, that the community stays safe and is vigilant,” Michelle Holguin, chief nursing officer for Hospitals of Providence, said.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new COVID-19 vaccine. Holguin said its important to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 every year.
“You know, so it’s important. Just because you got the flu shot last year, you got your COVID shot last year, doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily covered for the current variants,” she said.
The El Paso department of public health will be offering free vaccines throughout the season at different locations across the city.
