EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Irvin High School officially introduced Jon Elliott as the school’s new head football coach on Thursday.
Elliott will get the keys to the Rockets’ football program after spending the last four seasons at Chapin High School as an offensive coordinator. During his time at Chapin as part of head coach Ryan Warner’s staff, the Huskies made the playoffs all four seasons and won the District 1-5A championship in 2021.
The opportunity to coach at Irvin High School will be Elliott’s first head coaching job in his high school football coaching career.
Elliott takes over the head football coaching job at Irvin High School after then head coach Joe Urias stepped down after eight seasons at the helm of the program. Urias went 22-54 in eight seasons. Urias’ best season came in 2020 went Irvin went 4-1 in a shortened season and were co-champs of District 2-5A in 2020.
Elliott told KTSM the decision to take the head football coaching job at Irvin High School was a “no-brainer” as it’s an opportunity that meant a lot to him professionally and personally.
“I feel there’s a big sense of pride in rebuilding something from the ground up. Irvin just has tremendous tradition through the Stansburys, Patrick Norris, Mark Torres,” Elliott said. “My grandfather actually coached with Tony Shaw. There’s a lot of Irvin Rockets in my family and so and when it [the job] came open, it was really a no brainer.”
Elliott will now start the process of attempting to rebuild the Irvin High School football program, a program that was once one to be reckoned with from the early 1980s to late 1990s, under the direction of legendary head coach Tony Shaw.
Irvin is coming off a 1-9 season in 2023, it’s fourth losing season in the last five years.
