EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Juarez woman was struck and killed in a crash on Friday morning, Oct. 24, in South El Paso, according to the El Paso Police Department in a news release.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 24, officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Stanton Street and Seventh Avenue. The Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to assist with the investigation.

1 person seriously hurt in crash involving pedestrian in South El Paso

The initial investigation revealed that a pickup truck was going southbound on Stanton Street, approaching the intersection of Seventh Avenue. At the intersection, the driver made a left turn; however, 71-year-old Ricarda Meza Escobedo, from Juarez, was crossing at the same time and was struck by the pickup truck, according to EPPD.

Escobedo was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Medical Examiner’s Office contacted investigators to inform them Escobedo had died from her injuries sustained in the crash, EPPD added.

According to EPPD, the contributing factor in this crash was the driver’s failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. This is the 56th traffic fatality compared to 57 at this same time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
