EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Salvation Army of El Paso will host its 7th Annual Music and Arts Conservatory this summer.
The four-week conservatory program will be from June 16 through July 13 at the Salvation Army Citadel, 4900 Hercules Ave. Children age 9 to 14 may participate.
There is a $30 registration fee.
Students receive free loaner music equipment, curriculum materials and will participate in a variety of classes.
“Many children have talent that will never be developed because their parents can’t afford lessons, instruments, or other supplies. Their passion for music can be developed at this summer program,” the Salvation Army said in a news release.
Maj. Eloisa Estrada, commanding officer, said: “Our program improves children’s confidence and creativity. Music education today can lead to success tomorrow.”
Studies show that schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2% graduation rate, compared to 72.9% at schools without music programs, the Salvation Army said.
Students who participate in band or orchestra have the lowest levels of current lifelong use of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs among any group, the Salvation Army said.
Students will perform at a graduation concert held on Sunday, July 13. All students will be presented with their certificate and medal at the graduation concert, and top students will also be recognized with a trophy.
The Salvation Army is also seeking help with instrument donations such as guitars, trumpets, baritones, trombones, tubas, keyboards, and drums. Food donations or financial donations can also help.
