18-year-old man injured in shooting in Las Cruces

John Alexander Moreno, 28, was arrested Sunday evening and is charged with felony counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

The 18-year-old victim remains hospitalized.

According to court documents obtained by KTSM, Moreno, who goes by the street name of “Cash,” may have shot the victim in a dispute over a stolen phone. Moreno also allegedly was using a vehicle he had stolen from another man.

A witness told police he saw Moreno and the victim arguing and thought there was “bad blood” between them, possibly over a stolen phone, according to court records. The witness saw the actual shooting, too, and thought he was going to get shot next, according to court documents.

The witness said he yelled at Moreno to put his gun away and Moreno allegedly pointed the gun in the witness’ direction but at the ground and yelled, “Do you want to get shot?”

The witness said he saw the victim get shot in the stomach and the witness then hid behind a vehicle thinking he was going to get shot too, according to court documents.

Moreno is currently being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
