LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) — A 40-year-old man believed to be responsible for a stabbing that occurred last month has been charged with attempted murder, the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) said on Tuesday, July 15, in a news release.
LCPD said Jeffrey L. Cruickshank, 40, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Investigators obtained information that identified Cruickshank as the suspect and petitioned for an arrest warrant. He was arrested on June 23 on unrelated charges, and the warrant was served on June 30 while he was in custody, LCPD said.
LCPD said Cruickshank is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
As we previously reported, the incident occurred shortly after midnight on June 14, along the 200 block of East Idaho Avenue.
The victim, a 39-year-old man, told officers he was sitting in his car when the suspect approached and demanded the keys to his vehicle. The suspect began stabbing the victim after the request was denied, LCPD said.
LCPD said the victim was able to escape and ran to the Walgreens store on El Paseo Road before being airlifted to a hospital in El Paso. The victim has since been released from the hospital.
Police investigators also learned that Cruickshank tried to kill the victim by stabbing him in the neck and arm.
