EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Public Libraries will be hosting two film screenings of different love movies throughout the month of February.
The first film, “Love in the Time of Cholera,” will be from 2-4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10 in the staff conference room at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, located at 200 E Picacho Ave.
“Love in the Time of Cholera” tells the story of love between Ferminda Daza, her husband Juvenal Urbino and Florentino Ariza. The movie is rated R, according to the Las Cruces Public Libraries in a news release.
The film is based on the original book by award-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
In addition to the film, the Latiné-X Lit Book Club will discuss the book and film from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
The second film is the 1961 classic musical “West Side Story,” which will be shown from 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the staff conference room.
According to the Las Cruces Public Libraries, the English as Second Language Film Club will host the screening with Spanish subtitles.
At the end of the film, participants with the ESL Film Club will read a scene from the movie to help practice pronunciation.
“West Side Story” is a modern version of “Romeo and Juliet” with “groundbreaking and controversial work of cultural representation and the issues portrayed on screen remain relevant to the Latino community today,” Las Cruces Public Libraries said.
Readers interested in reading more Latiné-X stories can stop by the reference desk for a copy of a recommended Latiné-X romance reading list.
Copies of “Love in the Time of Cholera” are also available at the reference desk and readers can access an e-reader copy in Spanish through the library’s Libby app.
There will be a “Love is Love” book display in the teen section of the library, which will be displayed throughout February.
