EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Las Cruces owners of short-term rental properties are required to pay lodgers tax, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release on Wednesday, March 12.
“Lodgers tax is a 5% occupancy tax for revenues generated within lodging establishments. The tax is used for advertising, publicizing and promoting the city and some recreational and tourist facilities, and the acquisition and construction of such facilities,” according to the City of Las Cruces.
According to the City, short-term rentals became the subject of paying lodgers tax in January 2020.
This tax pertains to rental properties used in hosting services such as Airbnb, Vrbo, and more. The tax amount is five percent of the gross taxable rentals, which is the amount collected multiplied by 0.05.
To pay lodgers tax, short-term property owners must create an online account, answer questions about the rental and pay a $50 registration fee. After creating the account, property owners must pay the lodgers tax.
Payments and reporting are due by the 25th of each month for the previous month, according to the City.
If the property was not rented in the previous month, you must enter $0 by the 25th of the following month.
According to the City, short-term rentals are only required to pay lodgers tax and are not required to pay the convention center fee.
