EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) will provide free etching of vehicle identification numbers (VIN) to automobile windows from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Pep Boys, 1203 E. Lohman Ave.
LCPD says VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft. Etching the vehicle’s VIN onto multiple areas of a vehicle reduces the value of a stolen vehicle and increases the chances that a stolen vehicle can be identified and recovered.
Additionally, most insurance companies encourage VIN etching, and some provide discounts for vehicles that are etched, according to LCPD.
