EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Three New Mexico high school football teams from the Borderland lost in the semifinal round of the state playoffs and one came up short in the championship game of its division on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Las Cruces, seeded No. 5 in the 6A playoffs, lost 47-19 in the semifinals to No. 1 La Cueva at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.
La Cueva will now face No. 3 Cleveland, which is making its sixth straight appearance in the 6A state championship game. The time, date and location of that game has not been determined as of this writing.
Las Cruces High finished its season at 9-4 overall.
In the 5A playoffs, two Borderland teams made it to the semifinal round, only to come up short.
No. 1 Roswell beat No. 4 Gadsden 49-21 at the Wool Bowl in Roswell. In the other semifinal, No. 2 Artesia beat No. 6 Mayfield 50-14. Roswell and Artesia will face up in the 5A championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Wool Bowl.
Gadsden finsihed at 8-4, while Mayfield ended its season at 6-7.
In the state 8-man championship game, No. 3 Mesilla Valley Christian lost to top-ranked Melrose 62-12. The SonBlazers finished at 10-2, while Melrose finished a perfect 13-0.
