EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Former County Manager Fernando Macias continues to lead early in in the Democratic Primary for district attorney in Dona Ana County on Tuesday, June 4, but the race is tight.
Macias is leading with 34 percent (1,984 votes) after voting totals were updated at about 8 p.m. Shaharazad Booth is in a close second at 32 percent (1,869 votes).
Ramona J. Martinez is in third with 24 percent (1,414 votes), and incumbent Gerald Byers is trailing with 9 percent (523 votes).
The winner will face Republican Michael Caine, who is running unopposed in the Republican side of the primary.
Byers was elected in 2020. He was unopposed in the Democratic Primary and unopposed in the general election.
In the Democratic Primary for county clerk, incumbent Amanda Lopez Askin has taken a big lead after early voting with 88 percent or 4,655 votes. Challenger Andrew Ostic has 12 percent or 629 votes.
The winner will face Cheryl De Young, who is running unopposed in the Republican Primary.
In the Democratic Primary in State Representative District 53, challenger Jon Hill has taken a big lead over incumbent Willie Madrid. Hill has 59 percent or 390 votes, to 40 percent for Madrid (272 votes). The winner will face Republican Elizabeth Lee Winterrowd, who is running unopposed.
In State Representative District 35, incumbent Angelica Rubio has 64 percent (642 votes), followed by challenger Gabriel Duran Jr. with 36 percent (366 votes). There is not a Republican running in the district.
For County Commission District 2, Gloria Gameros is in the early lead with 55 percent or 237 votes, followed by incumbent and Anthony Mayor Diana Murillo with 45 percent or 194 votes. Lorraine Limon McCullough is running unopposed in the district as a Republican.
