EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 23-year-old man has been arrested for burglary and other charges in an incident that led to a West El Paso middle school being briefly put on lockdown earlier this week.
Giovanni Vega, 23, was arrested and is facing a handful of charges after being arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 28 in an incident near Hornedo Middle School, El Paso Police said.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, El Paso Police responded to a call about a burglary in progress along the 1400 block of Via Quijano.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect, later identified as Vega, who fled on foot near the school with a handgun, police said.
The school was briefly put on a “hold” protocol because of the incident, the district said.
Police learned that Vega had been checking cars to see if they were unlocked and was entering unlocked homes.
When he was arrested, he was found to be in possession of several stolen items, including a handgun, purse, wallet and state-issued identification card, all of which were taken from nearby homes, police said.
Vega was arrested and booked into El Paso County Detention Center.
He is facing the following charges: theft of firearm; burglary of habitation; evading arrest; and burglary of vehicles.
His bonds totaled $20,000.
