EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man was arrested in Otero County, New Mexico, after he allegedly held his 1-year-old child hostage with a weapon and had a brief standoff with law enforcement, the Otero County Sheriff’s Office said.
At about 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, Otero County Sheriff’s deputies were conducting an active investigation into an aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
Through interviews, deputies learned where the male subject was who was involved in the incident and they responded to the Boles Acres area. They were assisted by New Mexico State Police.
Boles Acres is about 8 miles south of Alamogordo.
Upon arriving, law enforcement made some announcements at the home and then the NMSP Tactical Team entered the home and encountered the man, who was holding his 1-year-old child and a “black-edged weapon.”
Crisis negotiators from New Mexico State Police successfully communicated with the man, who ultimately released the child.
The child was safely returned to his mother, the Otero County Sheriff’s Office said.
After a brief standoff, the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Office.
The man was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance and was later booked into the Otero County Detention Center.
The man, who has not name in the news release, is facing the following charges: aggravated battery (great bodily harm); two counts of kidnapping; one count of aggravated assault with intent to commit a violent felony; and one count of resisting, evading and obstructing an officer.
