CULBERSON COUNTY, Texas (KTSM) — A 52-year-old man is dead after a crash early Sunday morning, July 20, 19 miles east of Van Horn in Culberson County, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said in a press release on Monday, July 21.
DPS says just after 4 a.m. on Sunday, Philyyaka Smith, 52, from Marshal, Texas, was driving on I-10 East near mile marker 160 in the right lane when the vehicle veered off the road, passed the improved shoulder, and drove onto the unimproved shoulder.
The vehicle then began to rotate and came to a rest on its left side, facing east, and became immobile.
DPS says Smith was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
