Posted on December 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 55-year-old man is facing a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer after he allegedly fired at a Luna County Sheriff’s deputy, barricaded himself in a truck and was in turn wounded during an officer-involved shooting on Sunday night, Dec. 1, in Deming, New Mexico State Police said.

John Dwillis, 55, was shot in the standoff and was flown to a hospital in Texas where he is in stable condition, New Mexico State Police said.

He is facing a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer from the incident.

No officers were injured in the incident, State Police said.

At around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, deputies from the Luna County Sheriff’s Office were sent out to 8030 Monte Road SE in Deming for a domestic disturbance call, State Police said.

When deputies arrived, they made contact with Dwillis, who was standing near a pickup truck.

At some point, Dwillis fired at least one round from a gun and then barricaded himself in the truck, State Police said.

Deputies retreated and called for assistance, State Police said.

NM State Police officers soon arrived on scene and attempted to negotiate with Dwillis. During the negotiations, a New Mexico State Police officer fired at least one round from his duty gun and struck Dwillis, State Police said.

The identity of the New Mexico State Police officer will not be released until interviews are completed. The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave, according to State Police.

This case is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
