EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – An Otero County jury has found the man accused of shooting and killing Alamogordo police officer Anthony Ferguson guilty of murder and other additional charges, the Office of the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney announced Friday, Nov. 8 in a news release.
Dominic De La O, 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder and additional charges including tampering with evidence, aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer, criminal trespass and two counts of resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer, according to the news release.
According to the news release, the jury reached this verdict after hearing testimony from 21 witnesses called by the prosecution detailing the events that occurred on July 15, 2023.
On July 15, an officer initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of 9th Street and Puerto Rico Avenue in Alamogordo.
Two individuals exited the vehicle with their hands raised, approaching the officer. At this point, De La O jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and fled the scene, according to the news release.
During the pursuit, De La O crashed into a light pole and exited the vehicle with a sawed-off shotgun resulting in a foot pursuit, during which De La O turned and shot officer Ferguson, according to the news release.
Officer Ferguson was air lifted to the University Medical Center in El Paso where he later died from his injuries on July 16, 2023.
According to the news release, De La O will remain in custody pending sentencing, which is scheduled at 9 a.m. Nov. 12.
De La O is facing a maximum sentence of life without parole plus eight years and 361 days, according to the news release.
