EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The man who allegedly kidnapped his 2-year-old son and prompted an Amber Alert last year, died on Saturday morning, Jan. 25, while being incarcerated at the El Paso County Detention Facility, according to a custodial death report obtained by KTSM.
According to the report, Miguel Angel Montoya, 30, was arrested early Thursday morning, Jan. 23, and was booked for sexual assault, seven counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, three counts of indecency with child sexual contact, abandon endanger of a child, and sexual abuse of child continuous with the victim under 14 years of age.
Shortly before 2:20 a.m. on Jan. 23, detention officers were conducting an administrative separation check, and upon checking Montoya’s cell, he was found lying on the bed and bleeding from both arms, according to the report.
According to the report, Montoya was “conscious and alert.” Detention officers and jail medical staff rendered aid and found wounds to both arms.
While attempting to administer medical aid, Montoya became combative attempting to refuse medical attention, according to the report.
According to the report, Montoya eventually lost consciousness while receiving aid, and medical staff immediately began performing CPR and used AED to revive Montoya.
El Paso Fire and Emergency Medical Services were notified and took Montoya to the University Medical Center where medical personnel continued to provide life-saving measures, according to the report.
According to the report, Montoya was subsequently admitted to the ICU where he experienced “multiple episodes of cardiac arrest.”
Hours later at 7:45 a.m., Montoya was pronounced dead, and the medical examiner was notified at 8:04 a.m., according to the report.
As we previously reported, on March 14 of last year, an Amber Alert issued for a 2-year-old boy triggered a manhunt and hours-long SWAT standoff with Montoya, the boy’s father.
El Paso Police took Montoya into custody that same day at Studio 6, located along the 11000 block of Gateway Blvd West at Lomaland. The boy was located, reportedly unharmed, and later returned to his mother.
Montoya was then booked into the El Paso County Downtown Jail the following day and was charged with assault family violence, unauthorized use of motor vehicle, and aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon. His bonds totaled to $235,000.
Montoya posted a cash or surety bond and was released the following month in April 2024.
Days later, that same month, Montoya was featured in the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers of El Paso’s “Most Wanted” fugitives for the week of April 19, 2024, for alleged harassment, the Sheriff’s Office said.
