EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Mary Haskins, wife of Don Haskins, has died at the age of 93, the UTEP Men’s Basketball team said in a post on X.
Mary was the “first lady of UTEP Basketball” and will “forever be remembered for her love and support of the Miners,” the post said.
Mary Haskins was married to Don Haskins, who was the head coach of UTEP’s basketball team from 1961 through 1999, leading the Miners to 719 wins as well as a national title in 1966, 14 NCAA tournament appearances, and seven Western Athletic Conference championships, according to UTEP’s website.
Haskins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 1997, and the Jim Thorpe Association Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Aug. 9, 1999, in Oklahoma City, according to UTEP’s website.
UTEP quotes Don Haskins as “one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.”
Don Haskins died at the age of 78 on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.
Don and Mary Haskins are survived by their three sons, Brent, David, and Steve. A fourth son, Mark, passed away in 1994, according to UTEP’s website.
