EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – UTEP track & field head coach, Mika Laaksonen, is set to fire after 28 years with the program. Laaksonen was at the helm of the team for 15 of those 28 years.
Laaksonen was a former Miner himself, a three time NCAA Champion in throwing back in 90’s for UTEP.
As a coach, Laaksonen produced 37 All-American honors – 21 on the men’s team and 16 on the women’s, in addition to countless conference honors.
As a team under Laaksonen, he led its women’s program to five conference titles (four indoor, one outdoor) and two on the men’s (one indoor, one outdoor). The highest UTEP men’s finished was eighth at the Indoor NCAA Championship in 2014 and 21st at the Outdoors NCAA Championship in 2017 for women’s.
The hunt for Laaksonen’s replacement is still ongoing.
