EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Four students from Montwood High School were awarded a check on Friday, May 30, for their pop-up thrift-style project.
Simon Villasenor, Sofia Varela, Arleen Maldonado and Emily Lee were presented a $2,000 grant from The Lead4Change Project for their student-led project, Rocky’s Closet, on May 30 at the Montwood High School Tony Harper gym, located at 12000 Montwood Dr.

According to the news release by Socorro Independent School District, Rocky’s Closet is a “pop-up, thrift-style experience aimed at boosting confidence and self-esteem by providing gently used clothing to students in need in a dignified and inclusive setting.”
The grant will help students to sustain and expand the project by purchasing additional supplies and resources for future events, according to Socorro ISD.
Lead4Change Project is a small grants program that supports middle- and high-school students in developing leadership skills through service-learning, according to Socorro ISD.

The school district said that with Rocky’s Closet, the students focused on identifying community needs and developing solutions, then applying them to their project.
According to Socorro ISD, the students collected donations of gently used clothing and shoes through promoting on social media and signs, and then carefully sorted the items to create a welcoming shopping experience.
When the pop-up event began, other Montwood High School students were able to select items for free by bringing a donation. Nearly every item was taken by the end of the day, Socorro ISD said.
