EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The New Mexico Forestry Division is asking the community to celebrate Memorial Day weekend safely by preventing human-caused wildfires.
According to the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s Forestry Division, the organization is working with local, state, federal and tribal partners and other organizations to provide information about how to be prepared for wildfires year-round.
These are the following tips and information to keep in mind before planning outdoor activitities:
Always check for fire restrictions and closures in the area you plan to visit before you leave
Stage 1: Fire Restrictions
Prohibits building and maintaining fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stove except within a developed recreation/improved site.
Prohibits smoking unless within an enclosed vehicle/building clear of flammable materials.
No discharge of fireworks or pyrotechnic devices.
Stage 2 Fire Restrictions
Prohibits building and maintaining fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stove.
Prohibits smoking.
Prohibits discharge of fireworks or pyrotechnic devices.
Prohibits the use of a chainsaw or other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine.
Prohibits the operation or use of an internal/external combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed.
Prohibits welding or operating with an open flame.
Prohibits the possessing of a motor vehicle off roads on federal lands, expect when parking in an area without vegetation and within 10 feet of the roadway.
Violating any state law that specifically concerning burning, fires or any other laws that have the purpose of preventing or restricting the spread of fires.

Make sure you are not dragging chains, parking on dry grass and that all smoking-related embers are safely disposed of during your travel to and from public lands.
