EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – New Mexico State Police issued more than 4,000 traffic citations and made more than 20 arrests for impaired driving across the state during a special operation over Thanksgiving weekend.
From Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Dec. 1, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) participated in a Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE) operation, which was implemented across all roadways in the state.
Due to the increased volume of traffic during the holiday weekend, NMSP enhanced patrol presence on roadways across all 12 State Police districts, NMSP said in a news release.
NMSP said the operation led to officers issuing over 4,000 traffic citations, including 140 for failure to wear seat belts.
Additionally, 22 arrests for impaired driving were made across the state. Officers also investigated 48 crashes, four of which involved alcohol.
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau issued 64 citations for commercial vehicles and conducted 71 commercial vehicle inspections, NMSP said.
“The New Mexico State Police prioritizes motorist safety. Officers will continue to conduct holiday travel operations throughout the year. NMSP encourages the public to drive safely and follow all traffic laws while traveling on New Mexico’s roadways,” read the news release.
