EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Newly elected El Paso County sheriff, Oscar Ugarte, will be sworn in as the clock winds down on 2024 and rings in the new year on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Ugarte will be sworn as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 3850 Justice St.

Doors will open at 11 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at midnight, “ushering in the new year and marking the start of Sheriff Ugarte’s term,” a news release sent out by Ugarte’s team said.

Ugarte, a Democrat, beat Republican Minerva Torres Shelton in the Nov. 5 general election.

Ugarte succeeds current El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, who is retiring after serving 16 years.

In addition to being sworn in, Ugarte will also oversee the swearing in of his
command staff, deputies and detention officers.

The community is invited to attend and watch the ceremony.
