EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has awarded 59 New Mexico fire departments for additional positions.
According to the DFA, the $24.9 million grant will help pay the salaries of 190 new firefighters and EMTs for three years.
“Firefighters are on the front lines protecting our communities from potentially devastating blazes daily,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “As fires––and especially wildfires––grow more frequent and intense in and around New Mexico communities, it makes good sense to provide them with the resources to protect people, pets, livestock, and property.”

According to the DFA, the initiative aims to assist rural and remote communities by increasing the number of first responders so that the community has the needed support and resources in times of emergency.
According to the DFA, agencies that have been awarded funding can also use it to transition volunteer firefighters to full-time paid first responders.
