KTSM News – NMDOT offers free car seat safety checks in Las Cruces

Posted on November 4, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A free car seat fitting station will be available to the public on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Las Cruces, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT).

The event will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Sisbarro Buick-GMC, located at 425 W. Boutz Road in Las Cruces.

The event will provide parents and caregivers with hands-on assistance from nationally certified child passenger safety technicians, who offer guidance on the correct selection, installation, and use of child safety and booster seats, NMDOT said.

To participate, attendees are encouraged to bring their car seat, the car seat manual, the vehicle manual, and if possible, the child who uses the seat.

A $35 fee may apply for seat replacements, and children must be present to be considered for a replacement, NMDOT said.

The following will happen at the event:

  • Technicians will spend approximately 30 minutes per seat educating parents and caregivers on the proper selection, installation, and use of their car and booster seats.
  • Parents and caregivers will also learn important information regarding common errors in car seat safety and be able to ask questions.
  • If a technician determines a car seat is recalled, expired, or otherwise unsafe, replacement seats will be available.
