KTSM News – Northeast El Paso project to boost mobility, safety

Posted on September 12, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday morning, Sept. 11, for the Sean Haggerty Drive Extension project, a transportation link that “will improve regional mobility, safety, and connectivity” in Northeast El Paso.

“This project is more than a state-of-the-art overpass improving connectivity from U.S. 54 to Dyer. It is an investment in safety, mobility, and quality of life for Northeast El Paso and the entire region,” said Deputy City Manager Yvette Hernandez, P.E.

The project will extend Sean Haggerty Drive from Nathan Bay Drive to Dyer Street, creating a continuous route for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, according to the City of El Paso.

This major infrastructure investment includes the following:

  • Construction of a new four-lane bridge and roadway approaches
  • Bicycle lanes and ADA-compliant sidewalks
  • A canopy bridge structure with decorative and dark sky-compliant lighting
  • Drainage structures
  • Street trees with their own irrigation system
  • Other amenities designed to meet the City’s “Complete Street” standards, ensuring safe and accessible travel for all modes of transportation

With an approximate budget of $34 million, the city said this project will deliver modern infrastructure that supports the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors while enhancing the region’s comprehensive transportation system.

City Representative for District 4, Cynthia Boyar Trejo, said she is excited for this project as the extension has been needed for many years.

“I know the community has been advocating for this. The city has been advocating for this, and now we are here breaking ground on this beautiful project that is going to provide the mobility here within our community, connecting neighborhoods,” she said.
