KTSM News – Officials, families honor King’s memory by volunteering at El Pasoans Fighting Hunger

Posted on January 20, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — New El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson, other elected officials and families honored the memory and legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.

Monday, Jan. 20 was the national holiday honoring King’s memory and his contributions to the United States.

One of the ways people choose to remember King is by volunteering and participating in a day of service instead of taking the holiday as a “day off.”

“Dr. King believed in the power of service and the importance of community,” said Susan Goodell, CEO of El Pasoans Fighting Hunger.

To amplify the spirit of service on MLK Day, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger is launching its first-ever “Family Day.” Families with children of all ages are invited to experience the “profound impact” of giving back, together, the food bank said.

This “Family Day” initiative will continue once a month, opening the doors for younger generations to discover the joy of volunteering, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger said.

“Instilling a sense of compassion and community engagement in children from a young age is invaluable,” Goodell said. “Family Day allows everyone to participate in making a difference, together.”

Other elected officials who volunteered at the food bank included: city Rep. Deanna Maldonado-Rocha; city Rep. Chris Canales and staff; County Commissioner Iliana Holguin and staff; and County Commissioner Jackie Arroyo Butler and staff.
