KTSM News – Officials urge community to protect people, pets from extreme heat

Posted on May 22, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In honor of National Heat Awareness Day, El Paso Animal Services, El Paso Police Department Animal Cruelty Unit and El Paso Fire Department will host an event to urge the community to protect themselves and pets from extreme heat.

The event, “HeatSafe: Protecting Pets & People,” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, May 24 at the El Paso Animal Services located at 5001 Fred Wilson.

“Every summer, the City of El Paso receives hundreds of calls due to heat-related emergencies such as a child or pet in a locked hot car and pets left outside without proper shade or water,” read a press release sent by the City.

During the event, the departments will collaborate to feature a live “hot car” demonstration to display how severe weather can impact humans and pets’ health, according to the City.

The City says the event will also feature education booths, information on local resources, free pet microchips and ID tags, discounted pet vaccines provided by Eastlake Animal clinic, giveaways for the first 50 attendees and more.
