EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Pebble Hills High School football head coach Mark Torres is departing El Paso to take the head football coaching job at Hays High School, a high school located in Buda, Texas near the Austin area.
Hays Consolidated Independent School District announced the hiring of Torres as Hays High School’s new head football coach and athletic director during a board meeting on Monday night.
Torres leaves Pebble Hills after being the head football coach there since 2015. The program participated in its first varsity season in 2016. During his time coaching Pebble Hills at the varsity level, Torres led the Spartans to four winning seasons, with the best season coming in 2022 as his squad went 10-2 and won its first District 1-6A title, becoming co-champs with Eastwood that season. Torres posted a 47-36 overall record at Pebble Hills and led the program to six playoff berths.
“The opportunity for my family and I to move out this way, coming from El Paso, it’s not just down the street,” Torres said during Hays CISD’s board meeting on Monday. “What an opportunity for us. It says a lot about the program that we’ve built at Pebble Hills. I was very fortunate and blessed the opportunity of a lifetime to open up Pebble Hills High School, the newest high school in El Paso, and without question, te best job in El Paso, Texas is now open.”
Torres will replace Les Goad, who retired last month after a 39-year career. Hays High School, which competes in Class 5A-Division I, is coming off a 4-6 season in 2023, its second losing season in the last three years.
As for Pebble Hills, the head coaching spot is now open and is sure a job many will vie for.
