EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department is teaming up with Auto Lube Express to have free VIN etching event this weekend to fight back on a rise in catalytic converter thefts.
The free event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Auto Lube Express, 11685 Pebble Hills Blvd.
El Paso Police say there have been more than 900 catalytic converter thefts over the past three years.
Events like this help to combat this rise in crime, El Paso Police said.
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is etched permanently on a vehicle’s catalytic converter.
That makes it more difficult for thieves to sell the stolen part without proof of ownership, police said.
The event is free.
