Posted on August 4, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Police have identitied a 28-year-old woman as the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 77-year-old woman last month in South-Central El Paso.

Police confirmed to KTSM that Melanie Christine Cuellar is wanted in connection with a July 18 crash that killed mother and grandmother, Maria Lopez.

Cuellar was featured in this past weekend’s “Most Wanted,” but was not formally connected to that crash in that weekly feature.

Cuellar is wanted for collision involving death, police said.

On July 19, police said Maria Lopez was crossing the 6800 block of Alameda in South-Central. She was struck by a light-colored SUV that was traveling west on Alameda.

The driver of the SUV did not stop and continued west on Alameda, police said at the time. Lopez died at the scene.

Police earlier said they found the vehicle that was involved in that crash. On July 24, they said they had a suspect, whom they didn’t identify, and were continuing to investigate the case.

Over the weekend, the daughter of the victim, Viviana Lopez, went on social media with a photo of the suspect asking for the public’s help. You can click here to watch.

“We just buried my mother. I say buried, because she is not at rest,” Viviana Lopez said in the social media clip. “She will rest when we catch the driver.”

“She is hiding and I need your help to find her,” Viviana Lopez added in the same social media clip. “She has been on the run and she has been hiding.”
