EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Regional transit services are returning to Socorro after they ended this summer, the El Paso Transportation Authority said in a news release on Monday, Oct. 6.
The El Paso Transportation Authority (ETA) and the City of Socorro have reached an agreement to restore regional transit services.
This comes after service was ended in July. El Paso County said that the Socorro City Council had voted twice to not participate in the regional transit system.
On Sept. 24, the ETA Board of Directors authorized the removal of restrictions placed upon passengers wanting to get picked up or dropped off within the City of Socorro as of Oct. 1, the Transit Authority said.
Starting Oct. 1, three routes will now make pickups and drop-offs within the City limits of Socorro.
Passengers wanting to board should signal to the driver as the bus approaches and ask them to stop at a safe location along the route, the Transit Authority said.
Route 50 only picks up and drops off at signed locations which can be found by clicking here.
“In order to ensure riders can travel seamlessly throughout the County, benefiting residents and visitors from Horizon City, Clint, San Elizario, Fabens and Tornillo, it was important to remove these restrictions so that a true County-wide transit system could operate,” said John Andoh, the new executive director of the El Paso Transportation Authority.
“We are looking forward to a renewed relationship with ETA, which includes their regional transit services connecting passengers to and from the City’s newly formed microtransit service which provides an enhanced level of transit services in the City of Socorro and takes passengers to areas that ETA fixed routes do not serve,” said Adriana Rodarte, city manager of the City of Socorro.
The City of Socorro has agreed to contribute $5,000 to ETA for transit services. It is the same amount as previously paid for a former Sun Metro route that ended service to Socorro in December 2024, according to the news release.
Socorro will continue to operate its microtransit service but will continue to have conversations with the Transit Authority about the future, the news release said.
