Posted on December 14, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Businessman and political newcomer Renard Johnson has taken the early lead in the runoff race for El Paso mayor after early voting totals were released at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Johnson has 14,574 votes or 57.24 percent and leads city Rep. for District 1 Brian Kennedy, who has 10,889 votes or 42.76 percent.

Johnson and Kennedy emerged from a crowded field of eight candidates during the Nov. 5 general election, but neither were able to secure 50 percent plus one vote, forcing a runoff.

They are vying to succeed incumbent Mayor Oscar Leeser, who is barred from term limits from seeking another term. Leeser is finshing up his second of two non-consecutive four-year terms.

Also on the ballot is judge for El Paso’s Municipal Court No. 4. Incumbent Lauren Ferris is facing challenger Samuel Flores.

Flores has the early lead after early voting totals were released at 7 p.m. Flores has 11,780 votes or 51.10 percent while Ferris has 11,275 votes or 48.90 percent.
