KTSM News – Ring in ‘Year of the Snake’ with annual Lunar New Year event

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Ring in the “Year of the Snake” at the sixth annual Lunar New Year celebration taking place this weekend.

The free, family-friendly event will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Feb. 1, at the Downtown Arts District corridor, the City of El Paso announced in a news release.

Free activities include the following:

  • Lunar New Year read & ride with El Paso Streetcar
    • Location: Glory Road Parking Garage
  • Interactive activities with Ai-Hwa Chinese Language School including The Art of Paper Cutting; DIY Sky Lanterns; Chinese Calligraphy Demonstration; Red Envelope Folktales
    • Location: El Paso Museum of Art, C2 Gallery
  • Korean games and Sae-Bae (Traditional bowing) with the Korean American Association of El Paso
    • Location: El Paso Museum of History, Seminar Room
  • Snake & lantern making with Frontera Arts & Education Collaborative
    • Location: El Paso Museum of History, First Floor
  • Zodiac activities and DIY beaded snakes with the Mexican American Cultural Center
    • Location: Cleveland Square Park
  • Hands-on activities from La Nube STEAM Discovery Center including Let’s Make a Kite!; Fireworks in a Jar; and Lunar New Year Slime
    • Location: La Nube
  • The archaeology of the Chinese sojourner immigrants in Downtown El Paso by the El Paso Museum of Archaeology at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
    • Location: El Paso Museum of History, Orientation Theatre
  • T.E.A. K-Pop performances at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
    • Location: El Paso Museum of Art, Lobby

The City said the celebration continues with a cultural procession at 3 p.m., featuring vibrant traditional attire and items, winding through the Downtown Arts District.

Following the procession, attendees can enjoy the dragon dance and other cultural performances at 4 p.m. in Cleveland Square Park, the City said.

The event will also feature local food vendors stationed near the El Paso Museum of History.

The City said attendees can also explore Lunar New Year-themed pop-up exhibits curated by the El Paso Museum of History, El Paso Museum of Archaeology, and El Paso Museum of Art.
