EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Make no mistake about it: I like smaller knives, knives that fit in the palm of my hand when closed and have about a 3-inch blade or even smaller.
But sometimes you need something more for your tasks at hand, whether working in the yard or around the house or whatever you are doing that day.

Fortunately, RoseCraft Blades has a modern knife that fits both bills and kind of feels like a multitool with its versatility.
The RoseCraft Bowfin is a big knife. But it also is designed to be choked up on and do closer work with it, too.
Let’s take a look.
The Bowfin is 4 ½ inches long when closed, 8.2 inches when open and weighs nearly 5 ounces. It is a meaty, beefy knife.
But the blade also has a good sized finger choil and a wider, flat spot on the top of the spine for placing your thumb. This makes the knife perfect for choking up on it, giving you greater control when making finer cuts.
It really is the best of both worlds – a big knife that can act like a smaller knife.
The knife also has a drop-point blade which to me is one of the most versatile styles of blades around. It has a big “belly” to maximize the cutting area and when choking up, it gives you the ability to make controlled “utility” cuts for doing things like opening up boxes.
A couple of other things really stand out about this knife.
The knife has a black micarta handle that features a “bowed” shape, hence the name of the knife.
The bow in the handle really allows the knife to follow the natural contour of your hand.

The micarta is well-done as usual, as you expect with anything that RoseCraft does. It has a slightly grippy feel and you can also see the waves or grains within the handle when you look at it up close.
Adding to the versatility are three ways to open the knife – a front flipper, ambidextrous thumb studs and the button lock.
I am usually not a big fan of front flippers but this one is very intuitive and easy to use.
The thumb studs also have a green anodized look to them, and that gives this knife a little splash of color.
And those thumb studs really rocket the blade out when using that method of deployment.
Again adding to its versatility, this knife has an ambidextrous pocket clip, making it adaptable for the lefties out there.

RoseCraft is known for its excellent slipjoint knives, but they also make great modern knives. Everything I have looked at from them – whether traditional or modern – has been extremely well done.
This knife company continues to set the bar high on what you expect from it.
As of this writing, the Bowfin is listed for $55.99 on the RoseCraft website, marked down from $69.99. The sale is listed as lasting through Thursday, May 15. Here is a link.
