KTSM News – Rough Edge EDC: Maxpedition pouch helps you get, stay organized

Posted on July 5, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Like most everday carry enthusiasts, my pockets are full of tools and gadgets.

But getting and staying organized is an entirely different matter.

California-based Maxpedition has long been a provider of backpacks, EDC pouches and other carry options that can help keep your pockets from being overrun with clutter.

The Maxpedition Platy Pocket Organizers. On left is the 5-inch-by-7-inch in multi-cam and on the right, is the 4-by-6 version in black. Displayed on a Junkin Genius hank.

The company, which has been around for more than two decades, recently released its new line of Platy Pocket Organizers — with the idea of creating a simple, but durable organizational system.

The new Platy organizers come in two sizes – 4 inches by 6 inches and the larger version of 5 by 7 inches.

Rough Edge EDC: QSP traditional combines artistry, function

The company is known for making no-nonsense gear that isn’t flashy but highly functional. These both seem to follow that blueprint.

When I first started getting into this everyday carry hobby back in 2023, some of the first gear I purchased were a couple of Maxpedition EDC pouches, basically clamshell-type pouches that keep your gear zipped up inside.

The Platy, however, is a flat carry system that has a couple of vertical sleeves on both the front and back side. The vertical sleeves can be used to carry a pocket knife, pen, flashlight and other gear without having to open a zipper to get to them.

The organizer also has a full-length YKK zipper on one side that allows access to a main compartment.

The side opposite the zipper compartment also has an elastic band running across the top third, giving you even more flexibility with what you carry.

The Platy is made of water-resistant-coated nylon and includes a paracord lanyard that allows you to carry the pouch around your neck or across your body.

You can also carry the pouch in a pocket, especially if you wear cargo pants.

The paracord is easily removable if you prefer not having it. Or you can stuff it into the main compartment and zip it up, without removing it.

Both sizes are virtually identical in their layout. Both are available in several different color schemes as well.

I got the smaller version in black and the larger one in multi-cam.

The smaller ones are available at the Maxpedition website for $18.99 and $21.99 for the multi-cam.

The larger version costs $19.99 and $22.99 for the multi-cam.

I have been carrying the smaller version around for awhile now and quickly created an impromptu loadout for my EDC.

This is just an example of what you can do.

You can use your imagination and create your own system of carry, depending on your professional and personal needs.

On the side that has the zipper, I have been carrying an Olight prybar and an Atomic Bear Rebel tactical pen in the two vertical “pen” sleeves.

Inside the zipped compartment, I have some Band-Aids, a magnifying lens, a small pair of tweezers, a flat roll of duct tape and some emergency paracord.

On the other side, I have been carrying a Molsect Coastline pocket knife (will have a separate look at the knife coming up in the near future), a small Olight i3T flashlight that is powered by a standard AAA battery and a Rite in the Rain pocket pen.

I also have been carrying a Log + Jotter pocket notebook in the full-size sleeve behind the knife, flashlight and pen. The notebook, which is a standard 3.5-inch-by-5.5-inch pocket notebook, stands a little taller than the sleeve.

Rough Edge EDC: Hand-painted notebooks add flair to daily carry

If you want to have a notebook that is more flush to that main sleeve, you might want to try something a tad smaller. I am in the process of ordering a Rite in the Rain spiral notebook that is 3-by-5, specifically to use in this pouch.

Each version of the Platy also has a sewn-on “grab” loop that you can use to grab the pouch or hang it up at home or the office.

I really loaded up the smaller version with gear, but still feel I could have gotten more into it if I had wanted to.

Really, the only thing that limits you on what you can do with this pouch is your own imagination and the gear that you own.

I will take a look at the larger pouch in the near future with a separate column.
